Cozumel, in Mayan language Kosom Lumil, is the third largest island in Mexico and the second most populated.

Among the most important archaeological sites to visit in Cozumel are the San Gervasio Ruins, where the sanctuary dedicated to “Ixchel”, the Mayan goddess of fertility, was erected.

The first inhabitants of Cozumel were the Mayas, who worshipped the goddess Ixchel, deity of fertility, childbirth, love and gestation. The love of the Mayan people for the goddess Ixchel was such that a sanctuary was built for her and it was the duty of every woman to go at least once in her life to worship her. Mayan Sacred Journey

It is a ritual performed by the Mayans paddling in canoes from Polé (today Xcaret) to Cuzamil (today Cozumel) in order to worship the goddess Ixchebelyax (Ixchel).

The Renewal of the Cosmos is underway and the rhythm of life must continue, just as the Mythic Canoe sails the sky towards the stars to close the cycles and times of adversity. The time has come for the purification and healing ceremonies held in the ancient commercial port of Polé and Cuzamil.

Pilgrims faced the adversities of the sea to seek the advice and wisdom of Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of fertility, the moon and gestation, as well as to ask for favors, health and fertility for their lands.
At that time, Maya priests and rulers communicated with the gods and organized rituals in which the community could participate.

The group of travelers leaving for “Cuzamil” also takes the opportunity to exchange products and trade with the natives of the paradisiacal island.

Once they receive their message, they travel back to the place we now know as Xcaret, and then take these words back to their respective communities.

Rebirth of the sacred Mayan journey

This ritual ceased to be celebrated with the arrival of the European conquerors for religious and commercial purposes.

However, the Mayan successors knew that sooner or later this famous ritual would be reborn. And so, the directors of Grupo Xcaret, together with the Government of the State of Quintana Roo, got together to rescue the Mayan customs and promote them.

Representatives from Xcaret, Xel-ha and Chankanaab parks were also part of this event.

The sacred journey begins in the evening at Xcaret Eco-archaeological Park.
The first encounter with the Mayan communities is to enter a lively market, where you can see how the natives exchanged skins, food, seeds, clothing, feathers and a myriad of merchandise.


The people in their pre-Hispanic clothing, the smell of food and copal, the cleanings of the shaman, as well as the Mayan music and language, are all part of the atmosphere of this tianguis straight out of a history book.

Afterwards, on a stage on the beach, the chants, prayers, dances and offerings that are part of the ritual to ask for the good fortune of the canoeists who will embark the following day take place.
The following morning, with the first rays of the sun, the 30 canoes begin their journey. Crewed by the enthusiastic volunteers who go into the sea.

It is a continuous rowing exercise and consists of a 28 kilometer journey through the 420 meter deep Cozumel channel.

Spiritual Rebirth

The sacred Mayan journey is represented mostly by young volunteers. They have been preparing physically and mentally for this challenge since January.
The key to success is training in rowing, swimming, flotation, physical conditioning and first aid.
It is important to say that for the ancient Mayans, crossing the sea was recreating the passage through the aquatic underworld. Symbolically, a spiritual death occurred.
Upon reaching dry land and after having coexisted with the forces of nature, the ancient Maya also experienced a spiritual rebirth.

The other side of the Sacred Journey

The turning point of the sacred journey is the arrival of the canoeists in Cozumel. It is exciting to see how the community receives them with joy, gifts and food. Everyone looks happy, it is an achievement for each one of them, for the Mayan community and for all the assistants.

In June is the religious feast of San Pedro and San Pablo, in September is the feast of San Miguel (the name of the municipal capital is San Miguel de Cozumel), in February or March is the carnival and in May is celebrated in El Cedral the feast of the Holy Cross.

The name of the ruin “El Caracol” was given because of the snails that ornament the small dome that crowns the roof of this small temple, hence the name. It is also known as “Tumba del Caracol”, because of its small size, which resembles a burial mound.

It is certain that this pre-Hispanic complex was built during the late Postclassic period (1200 – 1500 A.D.) and although it is believed that this archaeological site is dedicated to and was built in honor of the Mayan goddess Ixchel, there are no remains to prove it.

The ruin of the Caracol has a west-east alignment towards the islet “Celarain” 550 m. away and you can see the sunrise in alignment with it, on February 22 and October 20. In addition, the observation of celestial movements was of great importance to the ancient Maya.

That is why they developed calendars of great precision used in agricultural and religious activities, and transferred the knowledge to build their cities in harmony with the cosmos and worship the deities that inhabited the celestial vault.

The main temple is the one that gives name to the zone and it is a miniature temple of vaulted roof and four doors, that later was wrapped in three of its sides by a bigger construction.

On the roof it has a small square temple, with four openings and an upper hole, where a snail-shaped top was placed, decorated with four rows of natural snails embedded in the stucco.

One of the legends that embrace this archaeological zone is that people believe that the wind makes the snails whistle, and that the ancient Maya related it to hurricanes and the cult of the wind.

The singular decoration of the roof of this building is unique in the region. This makes it highly recommended for a visit, which includes an exceptional view of the sea at the southern tip of Cozumel Island.

The Caracol group is located at the southern tip of the island of Cozumel, on the dirt road leading to the Punta Celerain lighthouse, where there is currently a small museum which is in charge of the Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel.

The site is located within the ecological reserve of Punta Sur, administered by the same foundation. From the city of San Miguel de Cozumel, it can be easily accessed by following the perimeter road to the south of the island.

Among the products produced by these bees are honey, pollen, wax, propolis, in addition to their valuable service as pollinators. A melipona hive produces a liter and a half of honey per year, its production process takes longer compared to that of European bees that produce up to 30 liters of honey in a year.

Characteristics of the melipona bee

The main characteristic of the melipona bee is that it has no sting, but to defend its colony it “bites” everything that represents a threat, they cling in such a way that they die during combat.

They do not molt, their hive is permanent. They adapt easily to artificial hives and their behavior is not aggressive. When the queen bee is fertilized, she cannot fly. For this reason, unlike other species, they do not leave their breeding site. They are resistant to parasites and diseases.

Chocolate: food of the gods

Make your own Mayan chocolate from scratch. Discover the process of making chocolate from bean to bar inside this great little chocolate factory in Cozumel. Throughout the tour you will taste the different flavors of cocoa during the process and the Mayan drink made with the original ingredients.

The visit to the small and familiar chocolate factory consists of 3 parts:

1-. Museum history of chocolate in Mayan times:

A brief journey through time to discover the importance of the cocoa bean for the Mayas.

Cacao was already cultivated by the Mayas more than 2,500 years ago. The name “cacao” derives from the Nahuatl word cacahoatl or cacahuatl, meaning “bitter juice”, and “chocolate” derives from the Mayan word chocol, meaning “hot” and “water”, respectively.

In the 18th century, the naturalist Carolus Linnaeus, based on Mayan and Aztec beliefs, named the cacao tree with the scientific name Theobroma cacao, whose Latin meaning is “food of the gods”. This tree is a symbol of abundance, rulership and ancestry, and serves as a metaphorical conduit through which the souls of humans and the gods travel through earth, heaven and hell.

The Aztecs learned from the Maya the cultivation and use of cocoa. They called cacahuat to cocoa and xocolatl to the aromatic drink obtained from its fruits. At that time, xocolatl was appreciated as a restorative to give strength and awaken the sexual appetite, treat fatigue, increase the weight of the malnourished, stimulate the nervous system of the apathetic, exhausted or weak, improve digestion and stimulate the kidneys.

2-.Create your own chocolate

To prepare it, the Mayas ground the cocoa beans until they were reduced to powder and also added seeds or corn. The resulting powder was mixed with cold water and stirred until the foam rose.

According to the Chocolate Museum in Uxmal, Yucatán, the froth of the drink was directly related to the purity of the person who carried out the task; if the chocolate did not froth, the person was impure, and the more froth he produced, the greater the purity of his soul. The fate of those who failed to froth the drink was sacrifice.

Here we make the traditional drink, as they did in Mayan times. Cacao mixed with some spices, like the ones we have here in front of us, and with hot water. Here we have the cacao seed with the pulp covering it. That pulp is used to ferment the cacao, the seed is put in wooden boxes and left to rest for three to eight days. During this time, the pulp decomposes as it has sugar, makes an alcohol and is fermented. This cocoa without the shell, we are going to grind it. Using the metate we will grind until we have the powder, the fine powder. If the cocoa continues to be ground, the seed releases the fat and cocoa butter is created. This paste was used since pre-Hispanic times to treat wounds.

In the chocolate factory you will live the experience of grinding cocoa beans to transform them into cocoa paste and then into chocolate. You can take it home to prepare a delicious ancestral drink. Undoubtedly, another cultural secret of Cozumel.

3-. Tasting throughout the visit.

Cacao was the second most revered plant for the Maya, only after corn, and practically all that is known of the uses and elaboration of foods and beverages based on it comes from hieroglyphic inscriptions on ceramics that have survived to the present day.
The inscriptions not only indicated that a cup or vessel was used for cocoa, but also engraved with the flavor: bitter, sweet, fruity, cocoa mixed with corn and even cocoa seasoned with chili.

Military Ship in the Deep Sea

Since 2000, the C 53 sunken ship near Chankanaab Park has become part of Cozumel’s marine life. Felipe Xicoténcatl C-53 is its name and it is so impressive that it is well worth a dive on your next visit.

C-53 A ship that saved lives for two countries

This mine sweeper was designed for military use in 1944, during World War II. The ship fought in the Pacific and participated in important military operations.
So much so, that it received the five battle stars for its service at sea.
In 1946, when the war was over, she was decommissioned from the U.S. Navy.

What we know today as the Chankanaab wreck, was patrolling the Gulf of Mexico for 37 years. During that time she fought against illegal smuggling of drugs and weapons, and participated in numerous rescue missions.

Diving in El Barco Hundido (The Sunken Ship)

Although most tourists who visit Cozumel Island prefer to go to Cielo, Palancar, Chancanaab, among other sites where they can snorkel, El Barco Hundido is one of the favorite wrecks or sunken ships for many divers worldwide, it is at a depth of 24 meters, with a length of 56 meters. But the most interesting thing about it is that it is a submerged testimony of history.

The wreck of Chankanaab, Cozumel is one of the few wrecks that can be visited in the waters of the island. The reason is that the ships that have sunk throughout history in its vicinity, or did so at depths inaccessible to divers or have disappeared whipped by currents and tropical storms.

Throughout these 22 years several corals have grown on the metal of the sunken ship, in our visit we can find angel fish, barracudas, green moray eels, giant king crabs and fire worms.

Combined with a night dive in the Paradise reef of Cozumel Island, where many organisms remain asleep and hidden during the day, but during the night it is possible to appreciate a different scene, octopus, lobsters, crabs, squids. This wreck is an authentic historical testimony, but also a flourishing artificial reef exultant with life.

Of course the C-53 can be visited both inside and out. In fact, walking through the corridors, where sailors once worked, is an experience you will thoroughly enjoy.

Braving the current is worth it just to see almost the entire deck of the wreck from above. As divers get closer to the wreck, the current decreases, making it easier to make progress. 

Dive guides report that the boat Felipe Xicoténcatl is currently surrounded by sponges, starfish and multicolored fish. Some guides even say that they have seen sharks swimming around this boat, but they are harmless, so it is necessary to be accompanied by a diving expert with a minimum Open Water certification to do these dives.

6. Enjoy the most beautiful beaches

The island is known as an important diving destination, but its beautiful beaches are also must-see places to visit in Cozumel.
You can enjoy an authentic white sand paradise. It is not easy to choose, but here are my favorites:

Passion Island: it is a small private island of just 2 km with mangroves, beautiful reefs and long white sandy beaches. 

It can be reached by boat (15 min from Cozumel) and I recommend arriving early so you can enjoy all the facilities.

Chen rio: it is a well kept secret! It has lush vegetation, natural pools with crystal clear waters and a good seafood restaurant.

Playa Palancar: it is one of the most virgin beaches in Cozumel, although it has a beach club (free entrance and no minimum consumption). It is quite a touristy beach due to the beauty of its waters and its proximity to the Palancar and Colombia reefs.

Playa San Francisco: an ideal beach for families. There is a beach club where you can rent kayaks, paddle boards, 

jet skis, snorkeling equipment or enjoy the floating games. Also, the piña coladas are very good.

Playa Encantada: a quiet beach with golden sand and calm waters, it is located near the south of the island, 

near the Punta Celarain lighthouse and the archaeological site of El Caracol.

7. Take a gastronomic tour in the market

If you like to discover authentic places when you travel, I recommend you to take this guided tour.

The guide takes you to the market and several small places that are not touristy.

It is an opportunity to see the local life of Cozumel, to learn more about the history and culture of Mexico, 

to talk to the locals and, of course, to try some of the island’s specialties.

For me this was one of the best activities in Cozumel!

One of the best parts of visiting Cozumel is experiencing the local cuisine. 

Traditional Yucatan cuisine is only offered in this regional part of Mexico and, especially in Cozumel, 

it is some of the freshest and most authentic you can find.

A gastronomic tour is a fantastic way to explore the many flavors that have come together in the Yucatán. 

It can also function as a city tour, so it’s almost like doing two tours in one.

Gastronomic guided tour tend to take travelers off the beaten path to local restaurants and food stalls to sample 

everything from empanadas to tacos and everything in between.

If you prefer hands-on, consider booking a cooking class in Cozumel.

These are usually small classes and focus on traditional Yucatecan dishes and ingredients.

8. Visit a pearl farm

This is an unusual activity in Cozumel that few tourists know about.

Cozumel Pearl Farm is a family project that was created to study and sustainably cultivate the Pinctada Radiata, 

an oyster capable of producing pearls.

Over the years, they have started to offer exclusive tours for a maximum of 8 people.

First they take you by boat (45min) to the farm which is located on an islet of white sand between the Caribbean 

and the lagoon of Bahia Ciega, north of Cozumel.

The visit starts with a presentation of the project, the cultivation process, the research, etc. Afterwards, 

the guide will take you snorkeling in the crystal clear waters to see the oysters and the beautiful reef formations.

Then you can enjoy the pristine beach and hammocks, beer and burger included!
They even have a small jewelry shop if you want to buy pearls.

Visit the Cozumel Pearl Farm:

Guided tours from Monday to Saturday, departing at 10am and returning at 4pm.

9. Discover Mexico Park

It is an interactive open-air museum with models of all the most important monuments in Mexico: Chichen Itza, the ruins of Tulum, the Cathedral of Mexico, etc.

It is a must-see in Cozumel, as it allows you to get to know the most important places in Mexico.

There is even a performance of the Voladores de Papantla, an impressive ritual dance that 

has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Or you can choose the chocolate and tequila package, with buffet lunch.

In addition to admission to the park with guided tour and a welcome margarita, you will participate in a chocolate making workshop and an introduction to tequila where you will learn how to make a margarita.
