Visit the Cozumel Island | Coral Reefs & The Chankanaab National Park

Include Cozumel Island in your plans, as it is a true paradise.

This is a true paradise of adventure and relaxation, Cozumel is the largest island in the Mexican Caribbean and also the third largest in the country. A representative culture of history, between its Mayan vestiges and the natural wonders that you will find throughout your stay; an authentic earthly paradise that is in the middle of the sea, giving us beautiful white beaches, postcard sunsets and besides being world famous for its coral reefs. The island of Cozumel is a destination that I really recommend you personally, you will love it, and best of all, many of these activities are family friendly.

Located off the coast of Playa del Carmen, the island is approximately 48 kilometers long and 16 kilometers wide. Formerly known as Kuzamil, which means “the island of swallows” in Mayan, it is a favorite destination for cruisers and divers. Cozumel is recognized as one of the five best places to dive in the world, with coral reefs that reach exceptional depths.

That’s right, most of the amazing pictures you’ve seen of reefs are from Cozumel.

COZUMEL ISLAND REEFS NATIONAL PARK

It is the second largest reef in the world and one of the most beautiful. It is also known as “The Great Western Atlantic Reef Belt” or “Great Mayan Reef“. It has a great biodiversity of marine flora and fauna. Some of the species you will be able to observe are turtles (hawksbill, white or green turtles and the famous loggerhead), starfish, sea lions, sea urchins and the splendid toadfish, a species endemic to Cozumel.

From December to March you might be lucky enough to encounter giant manta rays, an unforgettable spectacle.

PALANCAR REEF

Palancar beach is a place of peace and tranquility. Located two kilometers south of Cozumel, it has fascinating caves and canyons and countless brightly colored marine species that have found their habitat in this environment.

With calm waters and majestic palm trees, this beach is ideal for snorkeling and discovering tropical fish that are already visible from the shore. If you are looking for a place away from the hustle and bustle, Palancar is considered an ideal place to relax and recharge your batteries.

When you arrive, ask about the services available for kayaking in the ocean, the noble waters of this beach will make the journey very pleasant. If you are looking for an aerial photograph, take a ride through the heights with a parachute tour.

Of course, the main attraction is underwater, where schools of fish, anemones, corals and a great diversity of marine fauna live. The easiest way is to rent snorkeling equipment, with which you can swim away from the beach. You can also take a diving tour to one of the reefs: an unforgettable multicolored experience awaits you!

From intermediate to advanced level, you can snorkel from 4.5 meters, or do deeper dives that can reach almost 40 meters under the sea: the natural spectacle of coral mountains, water gardens, tunnels and caves will leave you amazed.

CHANKANAAB NATURAL PARK (a really paradise in Cozumel)

chankanaab_national_park_cozumel

it is one of the major attractions in Cozumel and its name means “small sea”.

The Chankanaab natural park is a coastal cenote that is an authentic treasure unique in the world, since it is a coral formation in the interior of the island, which I repeat is UNIQUE IN THE WORLD.

The park is home to its world-renowned ecosystem and is considered a natural aquarium, the lagoon has more than 60 species of tropical fish, crustaceans and corals.

The park offers adventure, fun and tranquility. You can swim with dolphins or experience the Snuba or Seatrek are two exciting activities that give visitors the opportunity to look at the corals that are near the beach. You can also snorkel, scuba dive or enjoy a panoramic view from the 25-meter high zip line that crosses the beautiful lagoon.

There are beautiful botanical gardens with more than 350 species of plants and some ruins of the Mayan civilization.

If you just want to relax you can rent a hammock or enjoy a treatment or massage in one of the park’s spas.

Open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 to 16:00 hrs.

I hope you visit Cozumel soon, especially these I recommend, you will live a truly incredible experience.
