You will also discover the fascinating structures of the hives inside and out and how the bee colony is organized. At the end you will delight your palate by tasting different varieties of honey and observe how it is used to make different artisanal products.

Why are bees so important?

When one asks the traditional Maya priests or the honey beekeepers where these bees get their honey from, they answer that they go to a hole in the sky where the rain gods (the chaques) have a trough (a kind of canoe carved out of a big tree) full of honey and what the bees do is go up to the sky and bring down drops of honey for the people.

It is a sacred honey, the bees are sacred.

In our country, beekeeping is one of the most relevant activities due to the impact it has on sustainable development. For this reason, actions are carried out to raise awareness among the population about the important contribution of bees in food production and the balance of ecosystems, as well as to promote their care and conservation.

Melipona bees are the native species of Mexico, they are of vital importance due to their function as pollinators of plants of interest such as achiote, avocado, coffee, pumpkin, chayote, habanero chili, mango, cucumber, watermelon, tomato, among others…

Also, honey production is very important, there are more than 43 thousand beekeepers nationwide, who in the last 10 years their work has placed Mexico as the fifth largest exporter of honey and the ninth largest producer of honey.

Among the products produced by these bees are honey, pollen, wax, propolis, in addition to their valuable service as pollinators. A melipona hive produces a liter and a half of honey per year, its production process takes longer compared to that of European bees that produce up to 30 liters of honey in a year.

honeycomb

Although honey production is lower, it is much more beneficial than honey from other bees because its medicinal properties help the immune system, and it is also used to cure ailments, wounds, burns and diseases. It is also highly appreciated in the cosmetic industry, as it is used to create products such as soaps, creams and talcum powder.

Characteristics of the melipona bee

The main characteristic of the melipona bee is that it has no sting, but to defend its colony it “bites” everything that represents a threat, they cling in such a way that they die during combat.

They do not molt, their hive is permanent. They adapt easily to artificial hives and their behavior is not aggressive. When the queen bee is fertilized, she cannot fly. For this reason, unlike other species, they do not leave their breeding site. They are resistant to parasites and diseases.

Chocolate: food of the gods

Make your own Mayan chocolate from scratch. Discover the process of making chocolate from bean to bar inside this great little chocolate factory in Cozumel. Throughout the tour you will taste the different flavors of cocoa during the process and the Mayan drink made with the original ingredients.

chocolate-stages

The visit to the small and familiar chocolate factory consists of 3 parts:

1-. Museum history of chocolate in Mayan times:

A brief journey through time to discover the importance of the cocoa bean for the Mayas.

cocoa-and-Mayas

Cacao was already cultivated by the Mayas more than 2,500 years ago. The name “cacao” derives from the Nahuatl word cacahoatl or cacahuatl, meaning “bitter juice”, and “chocolate” derives from the Mayan word chocol, meaning “hot” and “water”, respectively.

In the 18th century, the naturalist Carolus Linnaeus, based on Mayan and Aztec beliefs, named the cacao tree with the scientific name Theobroma cacao, whose Latin meaning is “food of the gods”. This tree is a symbol of abundance, rulership and ancestry, and serves as a metaphorical conduit through which the souls of humans and the gods travel through earth, heaven and hell.

The Aztecs learned from the Maya the cultivation and use of cocoa. They called cacahuat to cocoa and xocolatl to the aromatic drink obtained from its fruits. At that time, xocolatl was appreciated as a restorative to give strength and awaken the sexual appetite, treat fatigue, increase the weight of the malnourished, stimulate the nervous system of the apathetic, exhausted or weak, improve digestion and stimulate the kidneys.

2-.Create your own chocolate

To prepare it, the Mayas ground the cocoa beans until they were reduced to powder and also added seeds or corn. The resulting powder was mixed with cold water and stirred until the foam rose.

cacao-ground-on-metate

According to the Chocolate Museum in Uxmal, Yucatán, the froth of the drink was directly related to the purity of the person who carried out the task; if the chocolate did not froth, the person was impure, and the more froth he produced, the greater the purity of his soul. The fate of those who failed to froth the drink was sacrifice.

Here we make the traditional drink, as they did in Mayan times. Cacao mixed with some spices, like the ones we have here in front of us, and with hot water. Here we have the cacao seed with the pulp covering it. That pulp is used to ferment the cacao, the seed is put in wooden boxes and left to rest for three to eight days. During this time, the pulp decomposes as it has sugar, makes an alcohol and is fermented. This cocoa without the shell, we are going to grind it. Using the metate we will grind until we have the powder, the fine powder. If the cocoa continues to be ground, the seed releases the fat and cocoa butter is created. This paste was used since pre-Hispanic times to treat wounds.

frothed-chocolate

In the chocolate factory you will live the experience of grinding cocoa beans to transform them into cocoa paste and then into chocolate. You can take it home to prepare a delicious ancestral drink. Undoubtedly, another cultural secret of Cozumel.

3-. Tasting throughout the visit.

Cacao was the second most revered plant for the Maya, only after corn, and practically all that is known of the uses and elaboration of foods and beverages based on it comes from hieroglyphic inscriptions on ceramics that have survived to the present day.
The inscriptions not only indicated that a cup or vessel was used for cocoa, but also engraved with the flavor: bitter, sweet, fruity, cocoa mixed with corn and even cocoa seasoned with chili.

chili-chocolate

During your visit you will taste different flavors of chocolate, from the roasted bean to the final product, you will also be able to observe through windows, the elaboration of chocolate and its packaging process. Totally accessible for the whole family.

Each intimate 90-minute tour starts on the hour (09:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m.) and costs $25 USD per person. As this is a small factory, space is limited, so they request online reservations with payment in advance. Regardless of whether you have booked a tour, you can visit the factory store to purchase chocolate souvenirs.

Pharmacological properties of chocolate

As a bonus, here are several beneficial effects of cocoa consumption, as it is an antioxidant, vasodilator, anti-inflammatory, anti-adhesive for white blood cells, anti-platelet aggregation, anti-diabetic and “bad” cholesterol reducer.

Chocolate is rich in components with euphoriant and stimulating properties. One of these components is phenylethylamine, which acts on the brain causing emotional well-being; it also activates the nervous system.

dark-chocolate-with-spearmint

It is beneficial to achieve greater activity and physical performance, because it possesses alkaloids such as caffeine and theobromine, which tend to excite the nervous system, promoting activity.

Recently it has been discovered that chocolate has antioxidant qualities. Consumed in moderation, it can be useful for cardiovascular health and as prevention of heart disease.

Guided toursin Cozumel, across from Playa del Carmen, lies one of Mexico’s most beautiful islands.

Cozumel has long been one of the top cruise and guided tour destinations in the world, and it’s no surprise.

The lush jungle-covered island is surrounded by sugary sand,

encircled by the deliciously warm and glistening Caribbean Sea.

With so much natural beauty and so many cruise lines docking each year,

travelers can expect a plethora of tours and excursions from Cozumel.

The island of Cozumel has been important throughout Mexican history.

It began as a sacred place for the Mayans, particularly the women,

who traveled from the mainland to worship Ix Chel, the goddess of fertility.

As it grew and developed over the centuries, it became a hotspot for cruise ships,

honeymooners and hikers from Playa del Carmen, who were attracted by its energetic

capital of San Miguel, as well as its magnificent beaches.

Today it is truly an idyllic island paradise filled with all kinds of adventures and activities, both on land and at sea.

From snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of the protected marine park to touring the coast

on a driverless buggy tour and even an underwater experience, these are the best tours and excursions in Cozumel.

1. Explore the ruins of Tulum

During your stay on the island of Cozumel, you will be steps away from the magnificent sights and ancient ruins of the mainland.

A visit to Tulum should be on your itinerary if you are staying in Cozumel.

Ancient Tulum is a city perched on a 40-foot cliff overlooking one of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches.

It is the only fortified Mayan city on the coast and its main tower is an iconic image recognized around the world.

The town dates back to 1200, although many buildings were not constructed until the 15th century.

To explore Tulum, this Tulum Mayan Ruins Exploration Guided Tour meets the requirements to take you from Cozumel to Tulum and back. The 5.5-hour tour simplifies things, including the ferry transfer to Playa del Carmen.

From Playa del Carmen, your guide will take you to the archaeological site of Tulum,

where you will take a walking guided tour to learn about the history of this beautiful historical site.

Bring a bathing suit if you want to swim in the beautiful waters below the ruins.

After the tour, you will return to the ferry terminal for the return trip to Cozumel

2. Swimming with fishes

Sunny Cozumel is one of the best diving destinations in the world.

Believe it or not, it ranks with Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Cozumel is located at the northern end of the Mesoamerican Reef,

which stretches along the Caribbean Sea, touching Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.

Cozumel is surrounded by the Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park,

home to 26 species of coral and more than 500 species of fish.
But even if you’re not a certified diver, you’re just wearing a snorkel mask for an equally fascinating experience.

Divers looking to make the most of their Cozumel vacation will want to book this Cozumel snorkeling guided tour,

which visits the Palancar, Columbia and Cielo reefs surrounding the island.

The four-hour guided tour begins on a glass-bottom boat, which departs from the pier.

The first stop will be El Cielo, which is one of the most spectacular places not only in Cozumel, but in all of Mexico.

El Cielo translates as ‘paradise’, and we’ll soon see why: a glance at the shallow waters will reveal a

white sandy bottom dotted with hundreds of beautiful starfish.

From El Cielo, the tour heads to Colombia Reef, known for its visibility, sea turtles, barracudas,

eagle rays and many more types of colorful fish.

Finally, head to Palancar Reef to see nurse sharks, lobsters, moray eels and more.

After four hours of frolicking in the crystal clear waters, divers re-board the boat for refreshments

before returning to the Cozumel pier.

3. Take a submarine ride

Not surprisingly, most guided tours and excursions from Cozumel tend to involve the water.

When it looks so dazzling and is teeming with such exquisite wildlife, it’s hard not to be in, on (or under) the water at all times.

Speaking of submarines, one of the best tours and excursions from Cozumel is to board a submarine for

a unique perspective beneath the waves.

This Atlantis expedition submarine takes travelers below the water’s surface to depths of up to

100 feet to discover the marine life that lives in the protected Chankanaab Park.

The tour begins with a short cruise along the coast of Cozumel to the dive site,

where visitors will board the U.S. Coast Guard-certified submarine and dive beneath the waves.

The submarine cruises along the ocean floor, revealing parts of the reef normally only seen by divers.

Keep your eyes peeled for parrotfish, grunts and groupers.

4. Try a Buggy in Cozumel

Ready for a different kind of adventure? How about exploring Cozumel from the driver’s seat of an adventurous buggy,

designed to handle the island’s rugged and winding terrain?

With this half-day autonomous buggy guided tour of Cozumel, guests are in control and drive the four-passenger vehicle around the island.

The tour begins when you meet your guide near the cruise port to pick up the keys to your buggy.

In a caravan-style train, you will follow the group to the first stop at El Cedral, which is a Mayan ruins site on the island.

Here you will spend an hour exploring the archaeological site, learning about Mayan history and their presence in Cozumel.

(Fun fact: Cozumel means “island of swallows” in Mayan).

After the ruins, the buggy tour continues around the island to discover the different and magnificent viewpoints.

Take a break to enjoy a delicious fresh lunch before putting on your snorkeling gear and diving into the waters of the Cozumel Reef and SkyReef National Park.

This tour lasts 4.5 hours and includes snorkel gear, lunch and snacks.

5. Take a tour along Cozumel in a sunset cruise

Visiting a beach destination in Mexico and skipping a sunset cruise would be a big mistake.

What could be more magnificent than admiring a spectacular tropical sunset at sea? Fortunately,

Cozumel does not disappoint when it comes to sunset catamaran cruises.

While each sunset cruise may be slightly different, most depart from San Miguel de Cozumel, the island’s main town.

Some cruises are more intimate than others and each has a different ambiance.

All tend to have good music and traditional food.

If you’re looking for more than just snacks, consider booking a dedicated dinner cruise, which will serve full meals.

And, of course, all cruises come with beautiful sunsets that light up the sky with bright swaths of pink, orange and purple.

6. Enjoy the most beautiful beaches

The island is known as an important diving destination, but its beautiful beaches are also must-see places to visit in Cozumel.
You can enjoy an authentic white sand paradise. It is not easy to choose, but here are my favorites:

Passion Island: it is a small private island of just 2 km with mangroves, beautiful reefs and long white sandy beaches.

It can be reached by boat (15 min from Cozumel) and I recommend arriving early so you can enjoy all the facilities.

Chen rio: it is a well kept secret! It has lush vegetation, natural pools with crystal clear waters and a good seafood restaurant.

Playa Palancar: it is one of the most virgin beaches in Cozumel, although it has a beach club (free entrance and no minimum consumption). It is quite a touristy beach due to the beauty of its waters and its proximity to the Palancar and Colombia reefs.

Playa San Francisco: an ideal beach for families. There is a beach club where you can rent kayaks, paddle boards,

jet skis, snorkeling equipment or enjoy the floating games. Also, the piña coladas are very good.

Playa Encantada: a quiet beach with golden sand and calm waters, it is located near the south of the island,

near the Punta Celarain lighthouse and the archaeological site of El Caracol.

7. Take a gastronomic tour in the market

If you like to discover authentic places when you travel, I recommend you to take this guided tour.

The guide takes you to the market and several small places that are not touristy.

It is an opportunity to see the local life of Cozumel, to learn more about the history and culture of Mexico,

to talk to the locals and, of course, to try some of the island’s specialties.

For me this was one of the best activities in Cozumel!

One of the best parts of visiting Cozumel is experiencing the local cuisine.

Traditional Yucatan cuisine is only offered in this regional part of Mexico and, especially in Cozumel,

it is some of the freshest and most authentic you can find.

A gastronomic tour is a fantastic way to explore the many flavors that have come together in the Yucatán.

It can also function as a city tour, so it’s almost like doing two tours in one.

Gastronomic guided tour tend to take travelers off the beaten path to local restaurants and food stalls to sample

everything from empanadas to tacos and everything in between.

If you prefer hands-on, consider booking a cooking class in Cozumel.

These are usually small classes and focus on traditional Yucatecan dishes and ingredients.

Some even include market tours, where your guide will show you how to select the freshest ingredients

to prepare these wonderful traditional recipes.

pearl-farms-cozumel-mexico

8. Visit a pearl farm

This is an unusual activity in Cozumel that few tourists know about.

Cozumel Pearl Farm is a family project that was created to study and sustainably cultivate the Pinctada Radiata,

an oyster capable of producing pearls.

Over the years, they have started to offer exclusive tours for a maximum of 8 people.

First they take you by boat (45min) to the farm which is located on an islet of white sand between the Caribbean

and the lagoon of Bahia Ciega, north of Cozumel.

The visit starts with a presentation of the project, the cultivation process, the research, etc. Afterwards,

the guide will take you snorkeling in the crystal clear waters to see the oysters and the beautiful reef formations.

Then you can enjoy the pristine beach and hammocks, beer and burger included!
They even have a small jewelry shop if you want to buy pearls.

Visit the Cozumel Pearl Farm:

Guided tours from Monday to Saturday, departing at 10am and returning at 4pm.
Maximum 8 people per tour (per day), so it is very important to book in advance.
It is also possible to sleep on site (camping).

9. Discover Mexico Park

It is an interactive open-air museum with models of all the most important monuments in Mexico: Chichen Itza, the ruins of Tulum, the Cathedral of Mexico, etc.

It is a must-see in Cozumel, as it allows you to get to know the most important places in Mexico.

There is even a performance of the Voladores de Papantla, an impressive ritual dance that

has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Or you can choose the chocolate and tequila package, with buffet lunch.

In addition to admission to the park with guided tour and a welcome margarita, you will participate in a chocolate making workshop and an introduction to tequila where you will learn how to make a margarita.

It also includes a taco buffet (with vegan options) with handmade tortillas.

10. Drive for adventure

Did you know that more than half of Cozumel’s land area is protected? This means that more than half of the island is still covered by undeveloped jungle.

A single road bypasses the part of the island that allows development, taking visitors from the touristy west side of the island to the wilder, more rugged east coast. The best way to get around? Driving a jeep, of course.

This combined jeep and snorkel tour is a great way to make the most of what Cozumel has to offer, all in one.

Get behind the wheel of a Jeep Wrangler and cruise the roads of Cozumel to familiarize yourself with the terrain.

The guided tour takes you from Punta Sur Eco Beach Park to snorkel and enjoy the picturesque powder-soft beaches.

It also includes a visit to an archaeological site, crocodile exhibits, lunch and more.

Swim along the shores of Playa el Cielito, part of the El Cielo Biosphere.

Snorkeling equipment is also provided to experience the Chankanaab reef. Guests are picked up and dropped off near the cruise port.

5 activities with children in Cozumel, Quintana Roo

Cozumel is a beautiful island located in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico , with perfect activities to do with children. For being a few kilometers from the entertaining Playa del Carmen.

It is an island full of peace and tranquility, with the best view of the turquoise blue ocean unmatched by Mexican beaches. It is, without a doubt, a wonderful destination to spend a few happy days with your family. These are 5 places you should not miss to visit with the little ones of the house:

San Gervasio, Cozumel

cozumel-archeoligical-site-for-children

To begin with, it is the Archaeological Zone of the island. As in all these sites in Mexico, it is an excellent activity to do whit children, perfect to learn a little of the history of our country. Specifically, about the Maya culture, founders of this beautiful place.

Being in these ruins means the opportunity for children to run free and explore ancient spaces, full of history as well as being hidden among nature.

Punta Sur Ecotourism Park

lighthouse-beach

This park is an ideal state reserve for families with nature-loving children. Among its beaches of fine white sand and turquoise blue waters are miles of reefs to observe marine life, as well as an aviary, in addition to areas for observing terrestrial animals. In other words, it is a fun, protected natural space to explore with the family.

Inside is the Celarain Lighthouse which, like any other lighthouse, has a powerful reflector that illuminates the ocean. To reach the top you have to climb 133 circular steps.

If you do not suffer from claustrophobia and you consider that you and your family are able to climb (at your own pace, without rushing) this amount of steps, it is an adventure that you must do with children. At the top you will have spectacular views of the ocean and the island. It is well worth it.

cozumel-chankanaab-park

This Mayan word means “small sea” in Spanish, and it is a large cenote where marine life thrives.

This natural paradise is located within the island’s National Marine Park and there are also several activities for the whole family: swimming with dolphins, zip lining, kayaking, sea lion show and exploring the botanical garden, among other activities that are perfect to do with children. The truth is that this place offers a day of guaranteed fun for the whole family.

Atlantis Submarine

submarine-cozumel-island

The Atlantis XII is the only tourist submarine in Mexico, and it is a true experience for the whole family. It is one of the most exciting activities you can do with children on the Cozumel island, as the submarine actually dives 30 meters under the sea, offering a natural view of the ocean depths.

It is a beautiful experience to observe the marine life without anyone telling you about it. “With more than 26 skylights and a large front window located at the bow of the submarine, especially the youngest members of the family will enjoy the most breathtaking views of the Chankanaab reef. You will have the opportunity to visit a mysterious sunken ship, more than 20 meters deep, while a member of our crew accompanies you with an entertaining narration.” Children and adults alike will rise to the surface in delight.

Downtown Cozumel

sa-miguel-downtown-cozumel-island

Finally, like all the centers of every town or city in Mexico, Cozumel’s is no exception. In my opinion this zócalo, located right on the ferry dock, is very “agringado”, but that does not take away from its beauty, on the contrary, it brings diversity and adds to the beauty of the Mexican. In these plazas you and your family can walk, run, eat and observe the local dynamics. A nice experience with the people who live and visit this island.

These 5 activities are, from my experience, the 5 most recommended when I ask myself what to see in Cozumel.

However, Cozumel works perfectly to stay with your family in an all-inclusive hotel, because the tranquility, the climate and the beauty of the sea lend themselves perfectly – much more than in other beaches – to enjoy with your family lying on the beach, eating unlimited meals at the hotel, taking advantage of the “kids club” that many of these resorts have, without having to travel, you can enjoy to the fullest, rest, have fun and finally return home with your heart swollen with love.

What to see in Cozumel - Sightseeing around the island

One of the best things to see in Cozumel, is San Miguel, the largest town on the island, where commercial stores, car rentals, nightlife, restaurants are concentrated, and from here there are three ways to get around Cozumel.

Some streets are decorated with huge graffiti murals of the SEA Walls, Murals For The Oceans project, painted by international artists.

In the western part of the island, the beaches between Punta Norte and Punta Sur, such as San Francisco or Playa del Sol, have fine white sand and calm, crystalline waters with a large number of marine species that can be observed, ideal for activities such as diving or snorkeling, along the reefs, highlighting the Palancar reef with intense underwater life, multiple species of tropical fish and black coral. On the other hand, the eastern part is open sea, so it is rougher, and extreme caution is recommended when bathing on this side of the island of Cozumel.

sa-miguel-downtown-cozumel-island

The coastal road that follows from San Miguel to the south goes along different beaches with bars, diving spots, the Chankanaab Park (Mayan site converted into a theme park) and resorts, and to the right the site of El Cedral. At the southern end, a detour indicates the entrance to the Punta Sur Eco-Beach Park (fee) where the Mayan remains of El Caracol and the Celarain Lighthouse are located. The park guards a bird habitat with sighting towers, crocodiles, turtle nesting area and the Navigation Museum.

Island of Passion

Another thing to see in Cozumel is a small piece of paradise of barely 1 km in extension, known as the Island of Passion or Mukyaj Peten -in Mayan-, a culture that considered it a sacred place in ancient times, It is usually a favorite place for couples who, attracted by the beauty of the landscape and a pre-Hispanic legend, decide to unite their lives among majestic views and in the belief that they receive the divinity of the deity, through a lasting union, emulating the love that Ixchel professed to Itzamná -God of the Sun.

It is best to dedicate a couple of days to Cozumel, if you want to travel in peace and quiet and enjoy its coastline. The gastronomic specialties of seafood are also a must to complete the visit, so do not forget to ask for a good tray of seafood.

How to get to Cozumel

Cozumel has its own International Airport, so you can make a direct arrival.

You can also arrive from Cancun International Airport, which is one hour away from Playa del Carmen.

From Playa del Carmen there are several ferry lines that will take you to Cozumel in approximately 30 to 45 minutes, until arriving in San Miguel de Cozumel.

To move around the island you can rent a car or a scooter, which are very good for touring the island and making stops to eat and bathe. Next to the road that runs along the coast, a second road for bicycles and motorcycles has been created, making it even safer to ride.

Cruises to Cozumel

The beauty of the island of Cozumel and the underwater reef has led to an increase in the arrival of cruise ships calling at the small port in recent years.

The numerous excursions around the island, both diving and visiting the beaches, are one of the most popular activities in Cozumel as well as in the Riviera Maya.
