Military Ship in the Deep Sea

Since 2000, the C 53 sunken ship near Parque Chankanaab has become part of Cozumel’s marine life. Felipe Xicoténcatl C-53 is its name and it is so impressive that it is well worth a dive on your next visit.

C-53 A ship that saved lives for two countries

This mine sweeper was designed for military use in 1944, during World War II. The ship fought in the Pacific and participated in important military operations.
So much so, that it received the five battle stars for its service at sea.
In 1946, when the war was over, she was decommissioned from the U.S. Navy.

In 1962 the Mexican Navy bought the ship to convert her into an Almirante class gunboat. Her new name was Felipe Xicotancatl C-53.

What we know today as the Chankanaab wreck, was patrolling the Gulf of Mexico for 37 years. During that time she fought against illegal smuggling of drugs and weapons, and participated in numerous rescue missions.

Diving in El Barco Hundido (The Sunken Ship)

Although most tourists who visit Cozumel Island prefer to go to Cielo, Palancar, Chancanaab, among other sites where they can snorkel, El Barco Hundido is one of the favorite wrecks or sunken ships for many divers worldwide, it is at a depth of 24 meters, with a length of 56 meters. But the most interesting thing about it is that it is a submerged testimony of history.

The wreck of Chankanaab, Cozumel is one of the few wrecks that can be visited in the waters of the island. The reason is that the ships that have sunk throughout history in its vicinity, or did so at depths inaccessible to divers or have disappeared whipped by currents and tropical storms.

However, the Felipe Xicotencatl C-53 does maintain great attractions that make it worthy of a dive.

Life in this sunken treasure

When it was finally decommissioned in 1999, the Felipe Xicotancatl C-53 still had one more mission to fulfill: to join the underwater treasures of Cozumel to the delight of divers.

On June 5, 2000, she began her new assignment, this time, at the bottom of the Caribbean Sea.

Throughout these 22 years several corals have grown on the metal of the sunken ship, in our visit we can find angel fish, barracudas, green moray eels, giant king crabs and fire worms.

Combined with a night dive in the Paradise reef of Cozumel Island, where many organisms remain asleep and hidden during the day, but during the night it is possible to appreciate a different scene, octopus, lobsters, crabs, squids. This wreck is an authentic historical testimony, but also a flourishing artificial reef exultant with life.

Of course the C-53 can be visited both inside and out. In fact, walking through the corridors, where sailors once worked, is an experience you will thoroughly enjoy.

Believe us when we tell you that descending to this fantastic wreck is an experience in the Cozumel Island Marine Park.

Braving the current is worth it just to see almost the entire deck of the wreck from above. As divers get closer to the wreck, the current decreases, making it easier to make progress.

Dive guides report that the boat Felipe Xicoténcatl is currently surrounded by sponges, starfish and multicolored fish. Some guides even say that they have seen sharks swimming around this boat, but they are harmless, so it is necessary to be accompanied by a diving expert with a minimum Open Water certification to do these dives.
We also recommend you not to take a flight 18 hours after your last dive.

whether we go as a family with children, group of friends, couple or if we make the trip alone and we want to join a group.

riosecreto-expedition-cancun-cozumel-mexico

What is Rio Secreto?

Rio Secreto (or Pool Tunich in Mayan) is a set of subway galleries and rivers formed from the erosion of the rock.

The continuous filtration of rainwater allows the stalactite and stalagmite formations that abound in the caves to take shape.

Some species of flora and fauna have evolved in this habitat characterized by the absence of sunlight.

Animals such as fish, insects and bats have used their auditory sensory capacity to compensate for the lack of light.

Trees have managed to extend their roots tens of meters to reach subway lagoons, searching for water for their growth.

Recognized by National Geographic as a sustainable project that allows you to approach

this natural wonder with the utmost professionalism and respect.

Rio Secreto opens the door to a world unknown to surface dwellers.

Environmental education is one of the aspects that prevails here

as well as the generation of the minimum impact on the tours since it is an extremely delicate ecosystem.

Rio Secreto - Sustainable Project

As a unique natural heritage Rio Secreto seeks to be more than a tourist option in the Riviera Maya

and its commitment to the environment is recognized by entities such as

National Geographic with whom we collaborated in a Documentary.

Since it is part of a Natural Reserve

its exploitation for tourism is governed by strict regulations that prioritize respect for nature

and collaboration with the owners of the land where Río Secreto is located.

The groups that visit Río Secreto are small and limited so that the human impact is not aggressive with its habitat.

It is the most exclusive activity and also the most personalized,

since we will choose how long the tour will last and we will decide how to face the challenges that we will encounter guided only by the light of a flashlight.

Tips and recommendations

– The pure waters as well as its ecosystem can be endangered if we use or do not eliminate from our body the chemicals present in perfumes, sunscreen, etc.

– Rio Secreto is surrounded by a lot of nature and for this reason we must be attentive to the fauna.

Especially with the ants that can bite and cause irritation and itching that it is better not to scratch as it will last longer.

Patience and the fresh water of the subway river will alleviate the itching.

– The tour is not demanding and people of all ages can do it.

The guides are totally professional and take care of the visitors in a friendly way.

– It is not allowed to bring any type of cameras and other similar products even if they are submersible

and it is recommended to leave any accessory in the lockers and not to leave any object inside the galleries and subway rivers.

-In each tour there will be a photographer who will take pictures of all participants, which will be available for sale in printed or digital form at the end of the tour.

– It is advisable to bring clothes or swimsuit to change at the end of the tour.

– The tour lasts approximately one hour and a half, plus the preparation time,

the guide’s talk and the buffet in the restaurant.

– Tips to the guide are not included in the entrance fee and are optional, but always appreciated depending on the degree of satisfaction.

– The tour is not suitable for people with reduced mobility or pregnant womens too, so now yo know where go in the next vacations.

What to see in Cozumel - Sightseeing around the island

One of the best things to see in Cozumel, is San Miguel, the largest town on the island, where commercial stores, car rentals, nightlife, restaurants are concentrated, and from here there are three ways to get around Cozumel.

Some streets are decorated with huge graffiti murals of the SEA Walls, Murals For The Oceans project, painted by international artists.

In the western part of the island, the beaches between Punta Norte and Punta Sur, such as San Francisco or Playa del Sol, have fine white sand and calm, crystalline waters with a large number of marine species that can be observed, ideal for activities such as diving or snorkeling, along the reefs, highlighting the Palancar reef with intense underwater life, multiple species of tropical fish and black coral. On the other hand, the eastern part is open sea, so it is rougher, and extreme caution is recommended when bathing on this side of the island of Cozumel.

sa-miguel-downtown-cozumel-island

The coastal road that follows from San Miguel to the south goes along different beaches with bars, diving spots, the Parque Chankanaab (Mayan site converted into a theme park) and resorts, and to the right the site of El Cedral. At the southern end, a detour indicates the entrance to the Punta Sur Eco-Beach Park (fee) where the Mayan remains of El Caracol and the Celarain Lighthouse are located. The park guards a bird habitat with sighting towers, crocodiles, turtle nesting area and the Navigation Museum.

Island of Passion

Another thing to see in Cozumel is a small piece of paradise of barely 1 km in extension, known as the Island of Passion or Mukyaj Peten -in Mayan-, a culture that considered it a sacred place in ancient times, It is usually a favorite place for couples who, attracted by the beauty of the landscape and a pre-Hispanic legend, decide to unite their lives among majestic views and in the belief that they receive the divinity of the deity, through a lasting union, emulating the love that Ixchel professed to Itzamná -God of the Sun.

It is best to dedicate a couple of days to Cozumel, if you want to travel in peace and quiet and enjoy its coastline. The gastronomic specialties of seafood are also a must to complete the visit, so do not forget to ask for a good tray of seafood.
